Serrapeptase is a natural, protein-splitting proteolytic enzyme produced by a friendly bacterium from the genus Serratia, which lives in the guts of silkworms. Serrapeptase was discovered in the 1960s and has since become a widely studied and used ingredient in various areas of dietary supplements. Although originally isolated from bacteria found in the digestive tract of silkworms, serrapeptase is now produced by fermenting these bacteria under laboratory conditions.

This process involves several steps:

Cultivation of the bacteria: Serratia marcescens is cultivated under controlled conditions that promote the production of serrapeptase.
Fermentation: the bacteria are fermented under specific conditions that optimise the production of the enzyme.
Isolation and purification: After fermentation, serrapeptase is isolated and purified to obtain a highly pure enzyme.
Serrapeptase is filled into a proprietary Drcaps® hypromellose plant capsule that is soluble only in the small intestine. It is therefore a special branded capsule that passes through the stomach unchanged. Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme isolated from a bacterium that does not cause disease (Enterobacteriaceae Serracia E15). At higher concentrations Serrapeptase in a capsule may cause digestive upset.
